What to know before selling imported wine in China

  • A filing to sell prepackaged food

Selling food in China takes a food business licence, but a business that only sells prepackaged food, such as bottled wine, files with the local market regulation authority instead. A registered business files within five working days of starting to sell. Adding activities that need a licence, such as serving food, means obtaining it.

  • Filing as a food importer

A food importer files with the customs office where it is based. It keeps import and sales records for each product, and checks that its overseas exporters and producers control food safety risks and supply food that meets Chinese law and national food safety standards.

  • Selling wine online

Under the E-Commerce Law, a business selling online registers as a market entity, holds the licences or filings its trade requires, and shows its business licence and those licences on its home page, or a link to them, keeping them up to date.

  • No sale to anyone under 18

The Law on the Protection of Minors forbids selling alcohol to minors, meaning anyone under 18. Sellers of alcohol must display a notice that they do not sell to minors, and ask for proof of identity when they cannot tell whether a buyer is a minor.

Questions and answers

Do I need a licence to sell imported wine in China?

A business that only sells prepackaged food, such as bottled wine, files with the local market regulation authority rather than taking a food business licence; other food activities need the licence. Importing it yourself also means filing as a food importer with your local customs office. Provinces may add their own rules, so check with your local authority.

Can I sell wine online to buyers in China?

Yes, as a registered business with the filings your trade requires, shown on your home page as the E-Commerce Law asks, and never to anyone under 18. Order requests from Asiavino reach you as the seller, and you confirm them, take payment and deliver.

Does the Distributor Studio cost anything?

No. The distributor account is free: no subscription, no listing fees and no commission on wine sales.

Who sells the wine to the buyer?

You do. Asiavino does not sell alcohol: it transmits each order request to the licensed distributor, who confirms it, takes payment and delivers.

Can I choose the brands and wines I carry?

Yes. You activate only the wines you distribute, in the markets where your company is licensed, and you can propose wines that are not on Asiavino yet.

Who can join?

Wine importers and distributors. When you join, you confirm that your company holds every licence and registration its markets require, and Asiavino can verify them.
