What to know before selling imported wine in Malaysia
A licence from the Licensing Board
Under the Excise Act 1976, selling or offering intoxicating liquor for sale, by retail or by wholesale, requires a licence from the Licensing Board for the area: a retail shop licence for consumption elsewhere, a public house licence for consumption on the premises, or a wholesale dealer's licence. A retail licence covers the place it specifies, and the Board may attach conditions.

A Customs import licence and tax stamps
Importing intoxicating liquor takes a licence from the Director General of Customs, valid for twelve months, and the licensee keeps a daily inventory record in Malay or English. Every bottle of imported wine must carry a tax stamp approved by the Director General.

Food import clearance through FoSIM
Importers and their forwarding agents register with the Ministry of Health's Food Safety Information System of Malaysia (FoSIM), through which every food import is released. A consignment may be held until tested, and food that does not comply with the Food Act 1983 and the Food Regulations 1985 can be refused entry, re-exported or recalled.

The age of 21 and display rules
Under the Food Regulations 1985, no alcoholic beverage may be sold to anyone under 21. In a retail outlet, alcoholic beverages are displayed in a separate cabinet or shelf, and the seller displays the health warning notice and a sign on the prohibition of sale to anyone under 21 where they are sold.

Questions and answers
Which licence do I need to sell wine in Malaysia?
A licence from the Licensing Board for your area under the Excise Act 1976: a retail shop licence to sell for consumption elsewhere, or a wholesale dealer's licence to sell by wholesale. Importing the wine yourself also takes a licence from the Director General of Customs.
Can I sell wine online to buyers in Malaysia?
The Excise Act 1976 requires a licence for any retail sale or offer for sale, in the place the licence specifies, and no alcoholic beverage may be sold to anyone under 21. The official texts read do not set out separate rules for online sale, so confirm the scope of your licence with your Licensing Board. Order requests from Asiavino reach you as the licensed seller, and you confirm them, take payment and deliver.
Does the Distributor Studio cost anything?
No. The distributor account is free: no subscription, no listing fees and no commission on wine sales.
Who sells the wine to the buyer?
You do. Asiavino does not sell alcohol: it transmits each order request to the licensed distributor, who confirms it, takes payment and delivers.
Can I choose the brands and wines I carry?
Yes. You activate only the wines you distribute, in the markets where your company is licensed, and you can propose wines that are not on Asiavino yet.
Who can join?
Wine importers and distributors. When you join, you confirm that your company holds every licence and registration its markets require, and Asiavino can verify them.
