What to know before selling imported wine in Macao, China

  • An import declaration, a licence only from 30%

Goods outside the import table of the External Trade Law clear customs with a completed import declaration and the required documents on the day they are collected. The table names alcoholic beverages only at 30% alcohol by volume or more: these need an import licence from the Economic and Technological Development Bureau and bear consumption tax.

  • No sale to anyone under 18

No one may sell or supply alcoholic beverages to anyone under 18. A seller in doubt about a buyer's age must ask for proof of identity, and a buyer who refuses is presumed to be under 18. Places that sell alcohol display a sign of at least 38 by 20 centimetres stating the prohibition.

  • Selling wine online or by post

Selling or supplying alcoholic beverages to anyone under 18 by any remote means, in particular the internet and post, is prohibited. A seller who sells remotely must have a mechanism that identifies the buyer's age, and must display the sign or warning stating the prohibition.

  • The alcohol content on the label

Every individually packaged alcoholic beverage sold or supplied must show its alcohol content, as a percentage by volume, clearly and prominently on its largest surface. Drinks served out of their packaging, or mixed from two or more drinks, must show that their alcohol content is above 1.2%.

Questions and answers

Do I need an import licence to bring wine into Macao, China?

Not for wine below 30% alcohol by volume: it clears customs with an import declaration. Alcoholic beverages of 30% or more need an import licence from the Economic and Technological Development Bureau, applied for before import, and bear consumption tax at 10% of the import value plus MOP 20.00 per litre.

Can I sell wine online to buyers in Macao, China?

Yes, within the rules on minors: no remote sale to anyone under 18, a mechanism that identifies the buyer's age, and the sign or warning stating the prohibition. Order requests from Asiavino reach you as the seller, and you confirm them, check the buyer's age, take payment and deliver.

Does the Distributor Studio cost anything?

No. The distributor account is free: no subscription, no listing fees and no commission on wine sales.

Who sells the wine to the buyer?

You do. Asiavino does not sell alcohol: it transmits each order request to the licensed distributor, who confirms it, takes payment and delivers.

Can I choose the brands and wines I carry?

Yes. You activate only the wines you distribute, in the markets where your company is licensed, and you can propose wines that are not on Asiavino yet.

Who can join?

Wine importers and distributors. When you join, you confirm that your company holds every licence and registration its markets require, and Asiavino can verify them.
