What to know before selling imported wine in Indonesia
Import status and a yearly import approval
Importing alcoholic beverages takes a registered importer status and an import approval from the Ministry of Trade, both held before the goods arrive, and wine for sale in Indonesia is imported only by a general importer. The approval lasts up to one calendar year and comes with a distribution plan naming the distributors the importer has appointed.
A set distribution chain
Under the Ministry of Trade's alcoholic beverages regulation, the importer supplies the distributors it appoints, who supply sub-distributors, retailers and direct sellers, and importers and distributors may not sell directly to consumers. Drinks for consumption on the spot are sold in hotels, restaurants and bars, and in other places set by the regional heads.
Excise registration and excise duty
Under the Excise Law, importers, distributors and retail outlets of excisable goods each need an excise registration number. Imported drinks of more than 5% and up to 20% alcohol carry Rp53,000 per litre, and those of more than 20% and up to 55% Rp152,000 per litre, under the rates in force since 1 January 2024.

A BPOM registration for each wine
Every processed food imported for sale in retail packaging must be registered with the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM), under a number that begins "BPOM RI ML", valid for five years and renewable. A wine brought in by a different importer is registered separately, and its label carries the importer's name and address in Indonesian.

No sale to anyone under 21
Alcoholic beverages may be sold only to consumers aged 21 or over, who show an identity card to the seller. Every bottle's label also warns that people under 21 and pregnant women must not drink it.
